Somalia elected Türkiye-educated Abdulkadir Muhammed Nur as speaker of the House of the People after he defeated lawmaker Abdulkadir Omar Maalin in a vote held in the capital, Mogadishu.
A total of 171 lawmakers cast ballots in the election, with Nur receiving 142 votes. The speakership is considered Somalia’s second-highest political office after the presidency.
Nur, who currently serves as Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, told lawmakers during the election that he wanted to use his diplomatic experience to bring the Somali Parliament up to international standards.
"A lawmaker, as we know, is the backbone of democracy. We will quickly carry out all the necessary work, starting with the parliament building."
Somalia’s Parliament consists of two chambers, the House of the People and the Senate. The House of the People carries out legislative work and plays an important role in overseeing the government and the country’s political decision-making process.
Parliamentary elections in Somalia are held every four years.
Nur was born in Baidoa, Somalia, on Oct. 21, 1985. He held various diplomatic positions at Somalia’s Embassy in Ankara from 2012 to 2016.
While serving in Türkiye, he studied at Ankara University’s Faculty of Political Sciences on a scholarship from the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities, graduating in 2016.
Nur later worked at Somalia’s Embassy in Ankara and the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency. He subsequently served as defense minister, justice minister, and minister of ports and maritime transport.
