U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is "absolutely willing to accept" the results of the midterm elections as Democrats were projected to take control of both the House and the Senate, but signaled he would use his veto power against their legislation.
"We’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out," Trump told The New York Times (NYT) while watching returns at the White House.
Trump later posted a picture of his red MAGA hat with a single word: "VETO."
"I think the Democrats did a good job. I really do. I think they did a good job. They fought hard," Trump told Fox News.
Asked whether he accepted the results, he replied: "Yes. Why wouldn’t you?"
"I don’t view it as a hit on me," he added.
"It’s one of the stronger powers that a president has," Trump said of the veto.
"They’ll send over things that are insane and I’ll veto them. And after a couple of months of vetoes, they’ll go out and they’ll say, how do we get this stuff done? And we’ll work together", he noted.
Democrats flipped at least six Republican-held Senate seats and at least 15 House districts, according to U.S. media projections.
In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton won a Senate seat, the first Democrat elected to the chamber from the state since the Great Depression. Sherrod Brown reclaimed Ohio’s Senate seat once held by Vice President JD Vance, and James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton in Texas.
Democrat Gina Hinojosa unseated Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, becoming the state’s first Democratic governor in more than three decades. Democrats also won governorships in Iowa and Ohio.
"The American people have rebuked the depravity, corruption, and incompetence of the failed lame-duck President Donald J. Trump," Sen. Jon Ossoff said in his Georgia victory speech.
"I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He blamed Fox News, saying the network “bears responsibility for these losses by constantly and consistently putting on the Democrat opposition," and said Abbott lost because he had become a "RINO."
"Candidate quality matters," a White House official told Agence France-Presse (AFP), adding: "President Trump’s resolve to stop the Radical Left is only going to become stronger. Buckle up."
The official also said voters would have "buyer’s remorse when gas prices come down quickly when the Iran conflict is solved."
Voting in the 2026 midterm elections officially drew to a close early Wednesday as final polls shut across Alaska, concluding nationwide balloting at 1:00 a.m. Eastern Time (06:00 a.m. GMT).
Results from Alaska could take longer to come in, however, with late-arriving ballots potentially delaying the final picture in some races. The new Congress takes office Jan. 3, 2027.
