U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a three-day ceasefire on May 9, 10 and 11, along with a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 prisoners from each side.
Trump announced the agreement in a post on Truth Social, saying the temporary truce would include “a suspension of all kinetic activity” in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump said.
Trump said the request for the ceasefire was made directly by him and thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for agreeing to it.
“This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” Trump said.
He said the ceasefire would coincide with Victory Day commemorations in Russia and noted Ukraine’s role in World War II.
“The Celebration in Russia is for Victory Day but, likewise, in Ukraine, because they were also a big part and factor of World War II,” Trump said.
Trump said the truce could mark a step toward ending the war.
“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” he said.
Trump said the ceasefire would also include a mutual prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine.
According to the U.S. president, each country would release 1,000 prisoners as part of the agreement.
He said talks on ending the war were continuing.
“Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day,” Trump said.
Russia had previously announced a two-day unilateral ceasefire to mark its May 9 World War II Victory Day.
Ukraine had previously said it also offered a truce but that Moscow ignored the proposal.
Trump said the new three-day ceasefire would take place Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
