Cuba, Colombia and Iran condemned reported U.S. military strikes on Venezuela after explosions were reported in Caracas and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro declared a state of emergency, accusing Washington of “extremely serious military aggression.”

U.S. media outlets, including Fox News and CBS News, reported that unnamed officials from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed U.S. involvement in the strikes, with CBS saying the attack was ordered by Trump.

The White House and the Pentagon have not officially commented, and Washington has not confirmed responsibility.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro rejected what he described as “unilateral military action” and called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations, warning against steps that could endanger civilians and escalate regional tensions.

Closed-door talks at the White House

Trump spoke after a closed-door meeting with Petro at the White House, saying the two leaders held a “very good” discussion. The meeting lasted about two hours and was not open to the press.

Trump said they worked on multiple issues and described Petro as “tremendous,” adding that the two sides “get along very well.”

Sanctions and drug trafficking discussed

Asked whether there was an understanding on combating drug trafficking, Trump said an agreement had been reached and that the issue was discussed during the talks.

He also said sanctions were among the subjects addressed.

Trump has previously accused Colombia of producing cocaine and sending it to the United States.
