U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that European countries should repay the United States for aid provided to Ukraine during former President Joe Biden’s administration.
Trump, who has repeatedly called on Europe to shoulder more of the cost of Western support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, made the comments in a post on Truth Social.
“Hundreds of Billions of Dollars were given to Ukraine and NATO, free of charge, that Europe would have paid for -- If they were only asked, but we will be asking for that money, though somewhat belatedly!” Trump wrote.
He did not specify which European countries he believed should repay the funds.
In the same post, Trump rejected reports that the U.S. military was running low on munitions during the war with Iran.
“We have virtually unlimited amounts of Mid to High Grade Ammunition,” Trump said, adding that munitions were being produced at “levels never seen before.”
Trump said Washington was building up its stockpiles and preparing for possible contingencies.
Trump said the U.S. had temporarily suspended overseas arms sales as it prioritizes its own ammunition supplies.
“We are taking [munitions] for ourselves, the U.S.A., rather than selling them to others, but the sales to Allies will soon again, begin,” he said.
