The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced Tuesday that Türkiye has donated 30,000 tents to support families displaced by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, marking the largest in-kind shelter contribution the U.N. agency has received for the country to date.
In a written statement, IOM said the donation was delivered through Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) at a time when humanitarian needs across Sudan continue to intensify.
“This donation is the largest in-kind shelter assistance IOM has ever received for Sudan,” the agency noted, stressing that the contribution comes amid one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies.
Sudan currently has 11.6 million people in urgent need of shelter, while only 9.4% of those needs are being met, according to IOM.
Millions have been displaced by fighting and many have reached overcrowded or makeshift sites with little or no protection.
IOM Director General Amy Pope welcomed the assistance, saying: “Türkiye’s contribution is both timely and very valuable.”
Highlighting the dire conditions many families face, Pope added: “This support will allow IOM and partners to expand shelter operations and reach families who have lost nearly everything, giving them safer accommodation and a measure of security as they rebuild their lives.”
Sudan has been gripped by violence since April 15, 2023, when clashes erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In Darfur’s largest city, el-Fasher, RSF forces have recently taken control after heavy fighting.
Videos shared online show RSF fighters forcibly displacing civilians and committing killings and torture against unarmed residents.
The conflict has left millions displaced internally and across borders, with humanitarian agencies warning of worsening conditions amid limited access and resources.
