As his term in Türkiye comes to an end, Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Bodnar praised Türkiye for its pivotal role in mediating during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and highlighted the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations.
In an interview, Bodnar emphasized that Türkiye was the only country able to bring warring parties to the negotation table. He referred to Türkiye as a "regional leader" and vital strategic partner for Ukraine.
"Türkiye's efforts in mediation have been exceptional, and its influence extends both regionally and globally," Bodnar stated.
Bodnar noted that despite the challenges posed by the war, Türkiye and Ukraine have continued to enhance their relationship.
He credited Türkiye with amplifying Ukraine's voice on the international stage and underscored the significance of the free trade agreement signed during his tenure. The agreement, along with collaborations in defense industries, such as Baykar's establishment of a production facility in Ukraine, marked a significant advancement in economic ties.
Reflecting on Türkiye's humanitarian response, Bodnar expressed gratitude for the aid provided to Ukrainians, especially during the early stages of the conflict.
"The warm reception of Ukrainian refugees and the care extended to orphans by the Turkish people have been deeply appreciated," he said.
The ambassador highlighted ongoing projects like the Grain Corridor Agreement, signed in Türkiye, which aimed to facilitate grain exports from Ukraine.
He also commended Türkiye's swift action in closing the straits to warships at the start of the conflict, a decision he described as crucial for the protection of Ukraine's southern coastline.
Bodnar reflected on the historical and cultural connections between Türkiye and Ukraine, noting the shared heritage seen in traditional garments and art.
He emphasized the importance of nurturing these cultural bonds and predicted a continued strengthening of relations under his successor.
