The U.N. Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, amid expectations of criticism from several member states.
Israel’s Ambassador to the U.N., Danny Danon, said on Saturday that the council would meet following Israel’s announcement recognizing the Republic of Somaliland.
Writing on the social media platform X, Danon said Israel would not avoid political debate over the decision.
“We will not shy away from political discussions,” Danon said, adding that Israel would “continue to act responsibly and with discretion to strengthen cooperation with partners who contribute to regional stability.”
Israel’s move has drawn criticism from countries across Africa and the Middle East, as well as from Türkiye and Pakistan.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union have also condemned the decision, describing it as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.
The emergency session is expected to address the political and regional implications of Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, which has declared independence from Somalia but lacks broad international recognition.
