U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson said on Tuesday he expects "very good results" from an upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, scheduled for Thursday.

"We've had a relationship for centuries," Wilson told state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) in an exclusive interview, calling Türkiye "a great ally in NATO of the United States to oppose totalitarianism."

Türkiye's NATO partnership praised

Wilson emphasized Türkiye's importance within NATO, describing it as "a very valued member." He said the United States appreciates its "long relationship" with Türkiye.

The congressman praised Türkiye's efforts to assist the Syrian people, stating that Türkiye and Saudi Arabia should be "given credit" for their role in ending the Damascus regime. This development has paved the way for Syrian people to rebuild their nation and form a sovereign state that embraces the country's diverse communities.

Türkiye as a model for Syrian reconstruction

Wilson pointed to Türkiye as an example for Syria, noting its experience in bringing together different religious and ethnic communities. "It's just so important–as President Trump has indicated–to give Syria a chance," he said.

"A person who actually had such an impact on President Trump indeed was President Erdogan, about explaining that President Ahmed al-Sharaa should be given a chance," Wilson added.

Expressing optimism for the region, Wilson said the U.S. desires "the best of stability, of peace and prosperity for the whole region."

"Türkiye has really led the way by providing for the removal of the Assad dictatorship," he concluded.
