U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, in a call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, highlighted the importance of close U.S.-Israel consultation on Syria’s evolving situation following the ousting of the Assad regime, according to the Pentagon.
- Austin reiterated the U.S. commitment to a peaceful and inclusive political transition in Syria and reaffirmed Washington’s mission to prevent Daesh from regaining a foothold.
Big picture
The deposed dictator Bashar al-Assad fled Syria over the weekend as anti-regime forces, with the Syrian National Army (SNA) as the main driving force, toppled his government in a rapid offensive, ending over 50 years of Assad family dominance.
- In response to the power vacuum, Israel conducted airstrikes that destroyed much of Syria’s strategic weapons stockpiles.

What’s next for Syria
