A United States federal judge on Friday temporarily halted the Trump administration’s effort to revoke Harvard University’s certification to enroll international students, following a lawsuit filed by the university.
U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs, based in Boston, issued the order shortly after Harvard challenged the administration’s decision. Burroughs agreed to pause the revocation while she considers further arguments in the case.
“We have just filed a complaint, and a motion for a temporary restraining order will follow,” Harvard President Alan M. Garber said in a letter. “As we pursue legal remedies, we will do everything in our power to support our students and scholars.”
The move to strip Harvard of its certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, announced Thursday by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, would affect the university’s ability to host international students on F and J visas.
“I am writing to inform you that effective immediately, Harvard University’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification is revoked,” Noem stated in a letter.
The Trump administration may appeal Burroughs’ ruling.
