U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signaled that Washington remains open to dialogue with Pyongyang, saying the U.S. is prepared to listen to views expressed by North Korean officials.

According to a transcript of Rubio’s press conference published by the U.S. State Department, he indicated that the door to dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang remains open.

“Whether it’s someone in Cuba, or one day someone in North Korea, or someone in Iran right now, we are always willing to listen. That’s different from a negotiation, of course, but we are prepared to hear the views that are expressed,” Rubio said.

He added that the U.S. is ready to speak with officials from any government that wishes to share information and perspectives. “It is my job to do so,” he said.

Kim says future ties depend on US stance

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said during the 9th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea that the future of U.S.-North Korea relations depends entirely on Washington’s attitude.

“The future of U.S.-North Korea relations depends entirely on the U.S. position,” Kim said.

Past summits

U.S. media reported that Rubio’s remarks could signal a possible effort by Washington to resume dialogue with North Korea.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim met three times: in Singapore in June 2018, in Hanoi in February 2019, and in June 2019 at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom.
