The death toll from two major earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 6,125, according to figures released by Venezuelan officials.
National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said in a social media statement that the number of fatalities increased by 579, bringing the total to 6,125, while the number of injured reached 16,740.
Interim President Delcy Rodriguez addressed the disaster response during a housing handover ceremony in the capital, Caracas.
She said the government would deliver 4,000 homes to 4,000 families by the end of the year, adding that land surveys and site clearing for new construction were ongoing.
She said these figures did not include additional housing projects yet to begin.
Rodriguez said the government aimed to support citizens affected by the twin earthquakes, stating, “we want every person, every child and every elder staying in temporary tent cities and camps to know they are not alone.”
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that two earthquakes, measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on June 24, 39 seconds apart.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) estimated on June 26 that the earthquakes caused $6.7 billion in material damage.
