Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he instructed Ukrainian representatives to contact U.S. President Donald Trump’s team to clarify details of Russia’s proposal for a short-term ceasefire.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine is seeking peace and carrying out the diplomatic work needed to bring the war to a real end.
“I have instructed our representatives to contact the team of the President of the United States and clarify the details of Russia’s proposal for a short-term ceasefire,” Zelenskyy said on X.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine wants to understand whether Russia’s proposal refers only to limited security arrangements or something broader.
“We will clarify what exactly this is about—a few hours of security for a parade in Moscow, or something more,” he said.
He said Ukraine’s position remains focused on a long-term ceasefire, reliable, guaranteed security for civilians, and lasting peace.
“Our proposal is a long-term ceasefire, reliable and guaranteed security for people, and a lasting peace,” Zelenskyy said.
“Ukraine is ready to work toward this in any dignified and effective format,” he added.
The Kremlin previously said Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet Zelenskyy, but only if the talks are aimed at signing a peace agreement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state media Vesti that Putin had repeatedly expressed willingness to meet Zelenskyy.
“The main thing is the purpose of the meeting. Why should they meet? Putin said he is ready to meet in Moscow at any time,” Peskov said.
He added that any meeting must be productive and focused on finalizing agreements.
“The main thing is that there is a purpose for the meeting, and most importantly, that the meeting be productive, and this can only be for the purpose of finalizing agreements,” Peskov said.
Peskov said a Putin-Zelenskyy meeting would have to be preceded by “serious work.”
He also claimed Ukraine lacks the “political will” to resolve the conflict.
“Moscow does not see the political will on the part of Kyiv to resolve the conflict in Ukraine,” he said.
