Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Wednesday that Russia was highly likely to launch a large-scale air attack against Ukraine overnight, urging residents across the country to heed air raid alerts and seek safety.
Zelenskyy said he received an update on the latest battlefield developments from Ukrainian Air Force Commander Anatoliy Krivonojka.
“The Russians prepared a massive attack several days ago, and there is a high probability that the strike will be carried out tonight,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.
“Please, in all regions of Ukraine, pay attention to air raid alerts today and stay safe,” he added.
Images shared by Ukrainian social media accounts showed Kyiv residents preparing to remain in the capital’s metro stations for protection.
Zelenskyy again urged Ukraine’s allies to provide the missiles needed by the country’s air-defense systems.
Russia has increased its use of ballistic missiles, which only U.S.-made Patriot systems can intercept, but Ukraine faces a severe shortage of PAC-3 interceptor missiles.
The shortage has worsened since the U.S. and Israel launched their war against Iran in February.
Zelenskyy met U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday and discussed the possibility of Ukraine producing Patriot interceptors.
Trump said in early July that he intended to allow Ukraine to manufacture the surface-to-air missiles.
