Türkiye’s anchovy exports continued to grow in 2025, with European countries remaining the main destination for Turkish seafood.

Official export figures show that anchovies generated more than $16 million in foreign currency income over the year, underlining their economic value beyond the domestic market.

According to data covering January to December 2025, Türkiye exported 4,039,477 kilograms (8,905,522 pounds) of anchovies to 21 countries, earning $16,172,978 in export revenue. This marked an increase compared to the same period in 2024, when exports totaled 3,353,217 kilograms and brought in $15,147,738.

The figures confirm steady international demand for Turkish anchovies, particularly in European markets. In addition to Europe, countries such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom also featured among the export destinations.

Belgium, France, Germany top demand for Turkish anchovies

European countries accounted for the largest share of Türkiye’s anchovy exports in 2025, both in volume and value.

  • Belgium ranked first among destination countries, importing Turkish anchovies worth $4,787,912
  • France followed with $4,594,218 in imports
  • Germany ranked third with $2,207,522

Export data also showed sharp contrasts between destination markets. While European demand remained strong, the lowest anchovy export value was recorded for Syria, at $444 over the same period.

Industry figures point out that demand from countries with large Turkish and expatriate communities continues to play a role in sustaining European imports.

However, the data also shows that anchovies have secured a stable place in the broader international seafood trade beyond diaspora consumption.

Trabzon strengthens its role in Türkiye’s anchovy exports

Trabzon stood out as a key contributor to Türkiye’s anchovy exports, with export volumes and revenues rising in 2025.

The Black Sea city exported 231,426 kilograms of anchovies to eight countries during the year, generating $662,115 in foreign currency income.

This represented a clear increase compared to 2024, when Trabzon exported 98,715 kilograms to five countries, earning $417,225.

Germany ranked as the leading destination for anchovies exported from Trabzon, accounting for $415,428 in export revenue.

The United Kingdom followed with $79,735, while Ukraine ranked third with imports worth $54,200.

Export figures from Trabzon reflected the broader national trend, with European countries dominating demand.

Data showed consistent growth in both export quantity and economic value, reinforcing the city’s role in Türkiye’s anchovy trade.
