Istanbul's Eurasia Tunnel will generate $8.6 billion in total public savings by the end of its operating period, according to the 2024-2025 Sustainability Report released by the project's operator.
The projection, based on a Deloitte analysis cited in the report, followed the tunnel's estimated $2.6 billion contribution to Türkiye's economy over its first nine years of operation through shorter travel times, lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions, and lower accident-related costs.
The report showed the tunnel recorded an average of 77,000 vehicles per day in 2025, exceeding its guaranteed traffic level by 8%. Since opening, the tunnel has handled more than 180 million vehicle crossings.
Over its first nine years of operation, the tunnel saved users a combined 250 million hours, with each trip reducing travel time by an average of 77 minutes. It also helped save 304,000 tons of fuel, cut emissions by 139,000 tons and reduced total vehicle travel by 687 million kilometers, helping lower accident-related costs.
The tunnel maintained its carbon-neutral status during the 2024-2025 period by sourcing all of its electricity from renewable energy.
It also cut annual electricity consumption by 80% through system upgrades over nine years, reducing usage to 6.5 million kilowatt-hours while adding renewable power generation through a rooftop solar plant.
The Eurasia Tunnel opened to traffic in December 2016 following a $1.2 billion build-operate-transfer (BOT) investment by a consortium of Türkiye's Yapi Merkezi and South Korea's SK Ecoplant.
The project links Istanbul's European and Asian sides through a 14.6-kilometer corridor, including a 5.4-kilometer double-deck road tunnel beneath the Bosphorus. It also cuts travel time on the route from as much as 100 minutes in heavy traffic to about 15 minutes under normal conditions.
