Karadeniz Holding has taken the first step toward adding four 300 MW Sea Lion Powerships to its fleet, with a steel-cutting ceremony in South Korea officially marking the start of construction on the next-generation vessels.
The project will be carried out by South Korean shipbuilder HSG Sungdong under an agreement with Karpowership, Karadeniz Holding's international brand.
Company Chairman Osman Murat Karadeniz, Vice Chairman Orhan Remzi Karadeniz and senior executives attended the steel-cutting ceremony for the first vessel at HSG Sungdong's shipyard.
The Sea Lion class is being developed to provide more efficient and flexible electricity generation.
Each Powership will have an installed capacity of 300 MW and will be equipped with three high-efficiency gas turbines operating in a combined-cycle configuration, improving fuel efficiency while reducing emissions compared with conventional power generation technologies.
Each vessel will measure 136 meters in length and have a 4.5-meter draft, allowing it to be deployed quickly in a variety of coastal environments. Deliveries are expected to take place in stages between January and May 2028.
The floating power plants can operate on multiple fuel types and connect directly to national electricity grids through integrated onboard substations. Built around a plug-and-play concept, they can begin generating electricity in less than 30 days once the necessary infrastructure is in place.
Karadeniz Holding's fleet currently includes Khan, Orca, Shark, Mermaid, Seal and Whale-class Powerships with capacities ranging from 30 MW to 600 MW. The Sea Lion class will become the latest addition to the company's lineup as it continues to expand its floating power generation business.
Founded in 1948, Karadeniz Holding supplies electricity in 14 countries through its Karpowership subsidiary and also ranks among the world's leading investors in floating LNG terminal vessels.
