The Mediterranean Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters’ Association (AHBIB) increased its exports by 13% in July compared to the same period last year, reaching $156 million, Mediterranean Exporters’ Associations (AKIB) reported.

AHBIB Chairman Veysel Memis stated that bakery products led the sector’s exports with $36.4 million, with Iraq—the top importing market—followed by Syria, Iran, Tunisia, and Germany.

In July, the highest export went to Iraq, rising 11% to reach $17.8 million. Exports to Syria increased 91% to $15.2 million, while exports to Iran surged 701% to $9.5 million.

Tunisia saw an 833% rise, with exports reaching $9.3 million, and exports to Germany grew 40%, totaling $6.2 million, according to Veysel Memis.

Chairman Memis noted that drought and climate change have caused yield losses in some products, emphasizing that Turkey is among the countries facing water scarcity.

He added that cultivating legumes that require less water and utilizing uncultivated land are necessary to boost agricultural production.

Memis stated, “If we can use our agricultural lands efficiently, we could increase our production capacity two to three times. We have factories capable of processing these products, and there are buyers in the global market. By boosting production, we can ensure that our citizens have access to affordable and healthy food while also earning more foreign currency for our country through exports.”
