Salesforce, a U.S.-based customer relationship management (CRM) provider, announced Tuesday an agreement to acquire Informatica, a cloud data management company, in a deal valued at approximately $8 billion.
The acquisition is expected to enhance Salesforce’s existing data foundation, particularly in support of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) applications. These systems are designed to make decisions and take actions autonomously based on contextual understanding and governed data.
Salesforce stated that the integration of Informatica’s technologies—including data cataloging, metadata management, governance, data privacy, and Master Data Management (MDM)—will support the deployment of responsible and scalable AI agents across enterprise environments. The company plans to combine Informatica’s services with existing Salesforce platforms such as Data Cloud, MuleSoft, Tableau, and Customer 360.
Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO of Salesforce, described the planned merger as a step toward creating a unified, agent-ready data platform. He noted that the combination of Salesforce’s Einstein and Informatica’s CLAIRE AI engines would support a data infrastructure built for explainability and scale.
Salesforce emphasized the role of Informatica’s tools in achieving data transparency, which includes tracking the source, transformation, and usage of data. These capabilities are considered important for compliance, auditability, and trust in automated systems.
According to Salesforce, Informatica’s metadata capabilities will complement its existing data model, allowing AI agents to interpret and act on information with context. Built-in controls such as MDM and policy management are also expected to help standardize and secure data used by AI systems.
