A Turkish Airlines aircraft arriving from Istanbul was forced into an emergency evacuation at Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport on Monday over a possible fire risk after smoke was detected in the landing gear area following landing.
Passengers on flight TK726 used emergency slides to leave the Airbus A330 aircraft after it stopped on the taxiway, officials confirmed.
Officials from Nepal’s civil aviation authority said a hydraulic leak in the aircraft’s braking system was believed to have caused the smoke and fire risk following the landing.
Firefighters quickly brought the situation under control, while all 273 passengers and 11 crew members were evacuated safely from the aircraft.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Turkish Airlines spokesperson Yahya Ustun said the aircraft made a normal landing before smoke was noticed in the landing gear area while the plane was taxiing.
Ustun explained in a post on X that the evacuation was carried out as a precaution following instructions from airport tower teams.
The airline also scheduled an additional return flight for affected passengers, while technical inspections of the aircraft were launched by maintenance teams.
Initial assessments indicated that the smoke may have been caused by a malfunction in a hydraulic pipe, he added.
