Türkiye's General Directorate of Mint and Stamp Printing is rolling out 500,000 commemorative ₺5 ($0.11) coins to mark the 36th NATO Leaders Summit, which takes place on July 7-8 at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.
The special coins are designed to commemorate Türkiye's hosting of the alliance's leaders while remaining legal tender for everyday use, according to a statement carried out by the state-run Anadolu Agency.
The commemorative coins are struck on the existing bimetallic ₺5 circulation coin. One side features the NATO logo, the summit venue and dates, along with a graphic of the Presidential Complex. The other side retains the standard design used on circulating ₺5 coins.
The mint has already produced an initial batch of 100,000 coins and plans to mint another 400,000 during the summit, bringing total production to 500,000, the directorate stated.
The commemorative release aims to preserve the memory of the 36th NATO Leaders Summit while giving the public a special circulation coin that can be used in daily transactions.
The NATO summit edition is based on Türkiye's newest circulating coin denomination. The General Directorate of Mint and Stamp Printing first introduced the bimetallic ₺5 coin in 2023, issuing 21.78 million coins during its debut year. Distribution accelerated to 162.63 million coins in 2024 and 172.79 million in 2025.
The mint has already released 67.69 million ₺5 coins in the first six months of 2026, alongside 90.44 million ₺1 coins, bringing total coin issuance across all denominations this year to 169.96 million.
Since 2009, the General Directorate of Mint and Stamp Printing has put more than 13.03 billion coins into circulation across all denominations, including 424.9 million ₺5 coins.
