Mehmet Bulgan, who has grown roses in Antalya for 20 years, is helping meet domestic demand with roses produced in different colors while offering an alternative to imports, with an annual production of 1.5 million stems.
Bulgan has produced flowers, mainly carnations, for 25 years in Antalya, which has significant potential in ornamental plant production.
He began growing roses in greenhouses in the Elmali district about 20 years ago to meet domestic consumers’ demand.
Bulgan now grows roses in different colors, mainly red, on about 70 decares and has reached an annual production capacity of 1.5 million stems.
His products are delivered to consumers in Türkiye’s 81 provinces.
Bulgan told Turkish news agency Anadolu that carnations are the most widely produced flowers in Türkiye and are sold both domestically and abroad.
He said domestic demand for roses had pushed flower sellers toward imports, adding that he began rose production to help reduce imports, even if only partially.
“I produce 1.5 million stems of roses a year and send them to every province in Türkiye,” Bulgan said.
“We produce in every color, including white and red, but we mainly produce red; 70% are red, and 30% are in different colors,” he added.
Bulgan said production is highest in the summer, noting that demand increases especially during the wedding season.
Selman Bulgan, who is responsible for planting, fertilizing and watering the roses in the greenhouse, said rose cultivation requires more care.
He said pruning is carried out in February and March.

“We start harvesting at the end of April and continue until November or December, depending on weather conditions,” he said.
“We produce here and send them to Antalya, where they are sold at auctions. They are collected early in the morning, taken to warehouses when the weather starts to warm up, and there they are made into bunches and packaged,” he added.
