Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced Tuesday that Türkiye now has five ports on the list of the world’s busiest container-handling ports, with the inclusion of Aliaga.
In a written statement, Uraloglu shared details from the list published by the U.K.-based maritime publication Lloyd’s List.
Noting that four Turkish ports were included in 2024, Uraloglu said, “With Aliaga Port being added to the list based on 2024 container-handling data, the number of Turkish ports has risen to five."
"This achievement once again demonstrates our strength in maritime trade and the returns of the investments we have made in our port infrastructure.”
Uraloglu highlighted the rankings of ports that strengthen Türkiye’s position in global maritime trade, reporting that this year Ambarli Port ranked 72nd, Kocaeli Port 86th, Tekirdag Port 94th and Mersin Port 98th.
Aliaga Port entered the list for the first time this year at 91st place.
“According to data from our Directorate General of Maritime Affairs, a total of 13.5 million TEU containers were handled at our country’s ports in 2024. These five ports handled 11.4 million TEU, accounting for 84.1% of Türkiye’s total container handling last year,” Uraloglu said.
He added that container-handling volume at Aliaga Regional Port Authority rose significantly, increasing 33.6% from approximately 1.6 million TEU in 2023 to about 2.1 million TEU in 2024.
