Türkiye’s Nuclear Regulatory Board has granted an operating license for the TR-2 Research Reactor at the Istanbul campus of the Nuclear Energy Research Institute under the Türkiye Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency, or TENMAK.
The license was issued under the board’s Aug. 6, 2026, decision numbered 2026-34/3 following a review and evaluation of TENMAK’s application.
The decision authorizes TENMAK to carry out activities related to the transition to operation of the TR-2 Research Reactor, which has a thermal power capacity of 5 megawatts.
The operating license applies to the TR-2 reactor located at TENMAK’s Nuclear Energy Research Institute campus in Istanbul.
With the license, TENMAK is authorized to conduct activities required during the reactor’s transition into operation.
The Nuclear Regulatory Board announced the decision publicly following completion of its assessment of the agency’s application.
TR-2 is a research reactor rather than a facility primarily intended for electricity generation.
The reactor is used for nuclear research, radioisotope production, irradiation activities, and scientific studies in the field of nuclear technology.
Its licensed thermal power capacity is 5 MW.
