Türkiye has increased the transaction limit for contactless payments without requiring a PIN from 1,500 lira to 2,500 lira, effective January 15, marking the first adjustment since the previous increase 1.5 years ago.

The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency informed banks of the change through an official communication, according to information obtained by Anadolu. The limit had last been raised to 1,500 lira on July 1, 2024.

The new threshold allows consumers to make purchases up to 2,500 lira using contactless-enabled cards or mobile devices without entering a password or PIN code. Transactions exceeding this amount will continue to require additional authentication.

International comparison shows varying standards

Contactless payment limits without PIN verification are implemented in many countries worldwide, though the thresholds vary significantly by region. In the United Kingdom, the limit stands at 100 pounds sterling, while France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Germany maintain a uniform limit of 50 euros.

The United States does not impose a standardized limit for contactless transactions. Instead, individual banks and financial institutions determine their own thresholds for PIN-free payments.

Contactless payment technology has become increasingly prevalent in retail environments globally, allowing customers to complete transactions by tapping their payment cards or mobile devices on terminal readers. The technology uses near-field communication to transmit payment information securely without physical contact between the card and reader.
