Türkiye loses over 200,000 jobs in September: TurkStat

Türkiye lost 200,000 jobs in September, bringing the total number of employed people down to 32.49 million, data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) showed Monday.

The decline in employment was accompanied by a marginal rise in the unemployment rate, which increased to 8.6% from 8.5% a month earlier.

The overall employment rate fell to 48.9%, including 66.3% for men and 31.8% for women.

Unemployment rises slightly as youth joblessness improves

The number of unemployed people aged 15 and over rose by 12,000 to 3.07 million.

Joblessness stood at 7.4% among men and 11.1% among women.

Youth unemployment—covering individuals aged 15 to 24—decreased by 0.9 percentage points from August to 14.9% in September. The rate was 11.4% for young men and 21.4% for young women.

The labor force also contracted, decreasing by 188,000 to 35.56 million, while the participation rate eased to 53.5%.

Broader underemployment indicators ease

The combined rate of time-related underemployment, potential labor force, and unemployment—also known as the broader unemployment rate—declined by 1.2 percentage points to 28.6% in September.

The integrated rate of time-related underemployment and unemployment stood at 18%, while the combined share of the unemployed and potential labor force was estimated at 20.5%.
