Türkiye’s longest and fastest underground metro line nears completion as testing work on the final section of the Halkali-Istanbul Airport-Gayrettepe Metro Project enters its last stage, Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Sunday.

Crews are wrapping up tests and commissioning work on the 17.5-kilometer Arnavutkoy-Halkali segment, the final missing link in the 69-kilometer (42.9 miles) route connecting central Istanbul with Istanbul Airport, the minister explained.

Line emerges as backbone of new metro network

The project, officially operated as the M11 line, runs from Gayrettepe, one of Istanbul’s main business hubs, to Halkali on the city’s western outskirts via Istanbul Airport.

Built as a high-speed airport transit line, the system is designed for trains capable of reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, making it one of the fastest metro networks in Istanbul.

Travel time between Gayrettepe and Istanbul Airport currently takes around 30 minutes, providing one of the quickest public transport links between the airport and the city center.

New connections to cut airport travel times

The line will connect with several major rail networks across Istanbul, including the Bakirkoy-Kirazli-Basaksehir-Kayasehir Metro and the Kabatas-Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey Metro.

At Halkali Station, passengers will also be able to transfer to the Yenikapi-Kirazli-Halkali Metro and Marmaray lines, linking the airport route with both the European and Asian sides of the city through Istanbul’s wider rail network.

The completed network will significantly shorten travel times between Istanbul districts and the airport, Uraloglu added.
