Türkiye’s state energy company BOTAS finalized two long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreements with Germany’s SEFE and Italy’s Eni on Wednesday, securing a combined total of 11 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas-equivalent LNG over the next decade.

The deals announced during the World LNG Summit held in Istanbul are part of Türkiye’s strategy to diversify its energy sources and strengthen energy security through long-term partnerships with European suppliers.

SEFE and Eni to supply 11 bcm of LNG to Türkiye starting 2028

Under the agreement with Germany’s state-owned energy firm SEFE (Securing Energy for Europe), deliveries will commence in 2028 and span 10 winter seasons. The contract covers the supply of approximately 6 bcm of LNG in gas-equivalent terms.

SEFE, which was previously Gazprom Germania before being nationalized by the German government, has been repositioning itself as a key energy supplier to European and partner markets following the disruption of Russian gas flows.

In a parallel deal, Botas signed a 10-year agreement with Italian energy company Eni. LNG deliveries from Eni are also scheduled to start in 2028, with a total contracted volume of 5 bcm to be delivered over 10 consecutive winter seasons.

Eni has long-standing ties with Türkiye and operates extensively in upstream and midstream oil and gas segments across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean.

Türkiye ramps up LNG deals

In recent months, Türkiye has stepped up its LNG procurement by signing multiple deals with international suppliers.

In September, BOTAS signed contracts totaling approximately 15 billion cubic meters with several international suppliers at the Gastech 2025 Forum in Milan. This was followed by a landmark 20-year agreement with Swiss energy trader Mercuria, under which Türkiye will receive 4 billion cubic meters of LNG annually. Another deal with Woodside Energy covers the delivery of approximately 5.8 billion cubic meters of gas-equivalent LNG over a 15-year period.

These efforts reflect Türkiye’s broader strategy to expand its LNG infrastructure and position itself as a regional energy hub, backed by substantial investments in floating storage regasification units (FSRUs) and LNG terminals in recent years. Most recently, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that Türkiye’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure has reached a level where nearly half of the country’s daily natural gas demand can now be met through seaborne LNG imports. Türkiye’s LNG regasification capacity has expanded from 34 million cubic meters per day in 2016 to approximately 161 million cubic meters per day in 2025.

Türkiye's total LNG imports rose to 10.45 billion cubic meters in the first nine months of 2025, up 30.1% year-over-year, increasing its share in total gas imports to approximately 25%, according to official data.
