President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Friday that Türkiye will begin trial production and deliver its first electricity from the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant by the end of 2025.

The announcement was made during a speech at the Natural Resources Summit in Istanbul.

Akkuyu Nuclear Plant nearing completion

The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, Türkiye’s first nuclear power facility, is nearing the final stages of its development, with the first reactor's construction almost complete. The project, which began in 2017, marks a significant milestone in Türkiye’s energy independence and security.

"By the end of this year, we will begin trial production and deliver the first electricity from Akkuyu," Erdogan said, underscoring the importance of this achievement for the country’s energy future.

Türkiye’s role in global energy security

Erdogan also emphasized Türkiye’s increasing role in global energy security, especially in light of the ongoing energy crisis in Europe. Türkiye's energy initiatives have gained importance as it seeks to provide solutions to the challenges faced by European countries in securing energy resources.

"We have undertaken numerous initiatives to contribute to regional energy security in order to help ease the energy crisis faced by European countries," Erdogan said. "Türkiye's emergence as a safe haven during Europe's energy crises is by no means a coincidence."

Energy milestones in Türkiye’s resource strategy

In addition to nuclear energy advancements, Erdogan provided insights into Türkiye’s broader energy strategy, including international ventures. He mentioned that Türkiye is set to begin production at one of its newly licensed gold fields in Niger this year.

Furthermore, Erdogan highlighted Türkiye’s domestic energy achievements, noting that daily oil production across the country had surpassed 135,000 barrels by the end of March 2025, a new record for the nation.

"With the operations in Gabar (in southeastern Türkiye), our daily oil production across Türkiye surpassed 135,000 barrels as of the end of March 2025, setting a record," he said.

The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is expected to play a crucial role in Türkiye’s energy landscape. Once operational, it will provide significant power to the nation’s grid, reducing reliance on external energy sources and contributing to Türkiye’s energy security.
