Türkiye is planning to sign new energy agreements with the United States as soon as next week, potentially including commitments to purchase additional U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to sources familiar with the plans, Bloomberg reports.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is also reportedly seeking a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Türkiye’s Energy Ministry declined to comment.
Balancing relations and energy needs
- The push reflects Ankara’s effort to restore ties with Washington after years of tension over Russian arms and differing Syria policies.
- Türkiye remains a major buyer of Russian crude while supplying Ukraine with drones and artillery. Erdogan has avoided sanctioning Moscow and has sought to mediate the conflict.
- Russia provided 41% of Türkiye’s gas imports last year; U.S. LNG shipments nearly doubled from 2020 to 2024 and are expected to rise further.
- Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar held talks with U.S. energy majors, including ConocoPhillips and Chevron.
- Türkiye’s nuclear strategy relies on Russia for its first power plant while inviting US investment in small modular reactors.
