Türkiye and the United Kingdom signed new agreements aimed at deepening trade and economic cooperation during the eighth term meeting of the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) held in London.

The agreements include a JETCO Action Plan featuring 16 concrete measures, as well as a Mutual Recognition Agreement. They were signed as part of Trade Minister Omer Bolat’s official visit to London for the JETCO meeting.

Action plan and mutual recognition agreement signed

In a statement shared on social media, Bolat said he met with U.K. Secretary of State for Business and Trade Peter Kyle within the framework of the JETCO meeting.

He said the talks focused on bilateral trade and economic cooperation opportunities, as well as new trade and investment prospects based on mutual trust and a win-win approach.

Bolat said that alongside the JETCO Protocol, the two sides signed the JETCO Action Plan, which plays a key role in advancing and deepening bilateral cooperation, and the Mutual Recognition Agreement.

Progress on free trade talks

Bolat noted that significant progress was also made during the talks toward updating the Türkiye-U.K. Free Trade Agreement.

He said he believes the productive discussions and signed agreements will bring new momentum to the Türkiye-U.K. economic partnership.

He added that Türkiye will continue efforts to strengthen trade and investment relations with the U.K. and elevate bilateral trade ties to the level of a strategic partnership, expressing hope that the longstanding friendship between the two countries will continue to grow economically.

Meetings with business representatives

Bolat also said he held meetings with Turkish private sector umbrella organizations and leading U.K. companies and institutions.

He highlighted Türkiye’s young and qualified workforce, its geographic advantages for access to new markets, and its comprehensive investment incentive program as key factors for attracting investment.

He added that discussions also included an evaluation of the tangible benefits of the memorandum of understanding signed with the U.K. on cooperation in third countries in the contracting sector, expressing hope that the meetings would open the door to new investment opportunities.
