Türkiye's natural gas imports plunged 32.7% year over year to approximately 2.8 billion cubic meters in August, while imports of crude oil and petroleum products rose 2.3% to 4.5 million tons, according to energy regulator data.

Iran bucked the broader decline in gas imports, increasing pipeline deliveries to Türkiye by 9.1% year over year to 916.3 million cubic meters. The country accounted for 33% of total natural gas imports, up from 20.4% a year earlier.

Gas consumption slumps 22%

Azerbaijan ranked second among pipeline suppliers, delivering 752.4 million cubic meters, down 28.2% from August 2025. Russian supplies suffered a much steeper drop, plunging 60.6% to 723.1 million cubic meters, with Russia's share of total imports falling to 26.1% from 44.5%.

Türkiye also imported 383.8 million cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Algeria, up 28.5% year over year. The United States, which supplied 100.5 million cubic meters in August 2025, recorded no natural gas exports to Türkiye in August 2026.

Türkiye's natural gas consumption fell 22% year-over-year to approximately 2.7 billion cubic meters in August.

Industry accounted for 1.1 billion cubic meters of consumption, while the transformation and conversion sector, including electricity generation, used 886 million cubic meters. Residential consumption reached 326 million cubic meters.

At the end of August, Türkiye held 5.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas in storage. Underground facilities contained 5.5 billion cubic meters, while LNG terminals held the remaining 304 million cubic meters.
