British multinational consumer goods company Unilever has canceled its promotional agreement with Galatasaray’s Belgian star Dries Mertens, sparking debates after the Turkish Super League match with Adana Demirspor.

Unilever abandoned a $50,000 deal for Mertens to attend a field inauguration, which was originally intended to include additional partnerships for advertising campaigns.

After considering the reactions on social media following the match in question, company officials decided not to work with the Belgian footballer, according to information obtained by the Turkish news outlet hurriyet.com.tr.

Controversial penalty led to walkout

On Feb. 9, during Matchweek 23 of the Turkish Super League, Galatasaray hosted Adana Demirspor at home, where the 37-year-old player fell to the ground in a controversial incident, leading the referee to award a penalty in favor of Galatasaray.

In protest of the decision, the visiting team walked off the pitch, abandoning the match. Following this, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) awarded Galatasaray a 3-0 forfeit victory.

Currently leading the league by 6 points, Galatasaray will host their arch-rival and closest title contender, Fenerbahce, at home on Monday, Feb. 24.
