Local gendarmerie arrested six suspects, including a former provincial governor and a retired gendarmerie colonel, for engaging in an illegal excavation in Mersin’s Gulnar district on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, the Gulnar District Gendarmerie Command launched an operation in the Kalecik area of Beydilli neighborhood. Authorities arrived at the site and caught the suspects as they attempted to leave in two parked vehicles.
The individuals detained at the scene were former governor Huseyin Baskaya, retired colonel Ali Aydin, along with M.T., A.U., H.A., and E.Y. The gendarmerie also seized excavation equipment found at the location.
Following identification procedures, Baskaya was released pending an investigation permit due to his former government status. The retired colonel and the remaining suspects were also released after providing statements.
