The 665th historic Kirkpinar oil wrestling festival has begun in Edirne, bringing together one of Türkiye's most established traditional sports events with the city's wider cultural and tourism identity.
Kirkpinar oil wrestling, a traditional form of wrestling in which athletes cover themselves with oil before competing, stands out not only as a sports gathering but also as a cultural symbol tied to history, identity and local pride.
Edirne Culture and Tourism Director Kemal Soyturk said Kirkpinar is among the city's strongest culture and tourism brands, helping open Edirne up to visitors from Türkiye and abroad. Soyturk said Kirkpinar brings together sport, history and culture while keeping alive values linked with courage, moral conduct and virtue in Turkish society.
Soyturk said the true pehlivan, a traditional wrestler, is not only the person who defeats an opponent, but someone who uses strength fairly, respects rivals, follows the rules and does not give up moral values.
Soyturk linked Kirkpinar to the older Turkic idea of the "alp," a figure admired not only for bravery but also for honesty, justice and moral standing.
Historic wrestling lodges also played a role in passing down the Kirkpinar spirit. Soyturk said these centers trained wrestlers not only physically but also morally, teaching patience, humility, discipline and respect for masters.
Kirkpinar is listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, giving the festival a stronger international profile as one of the world's most important traditional sports organizations.
During Kirkpinar week, Edirne sees stronger visitor activity across accommodation, food and beverage, shopping and other local sectors as guests come in for the festival.
Visitors drawn in by Kirkpinar are also encouraged to discover Edirne's historic monuments, museums, cultural heritage and rich cuisine, strengthening the city's wider cultural tourism appeal.
