Painters from various countries gather at the 2nd International Watercolor Festival in Duzce, putting the city's historic sites and natural beauty on canvas.
Organized by the Akcakoca Tourism Promotion Association under the theme "Cultures Meet," the festival draws 81 painters from Türkiye, Switzerland, China, Mexico and 13 other countries. Support comes from the district governorship, the Duzce and Akcakoca municipalities, Duzce University, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and local tradespeople.
First, artists painted landmarks in Akcakoca district, including Yukari Mahalle, the harbor, Genoese Castle and the 123-year-old Mehmet Arif Bey Mansion, in watercolor. They then moved to the ancient city of Prusias Ad Hypium in the Konuralp area.
Dating to the 3rd century B.C., the site stands out for its grand theater that could hold 10,000-12,000 people.
Painters toured the area and brought its historic texture onto their canvases.
Indian painter Vikram Chitale told Anadolu Agency that he feels honored to be invited to such a major event in Türkiye, adding that artists from different countries coming together matters greatly for cultural exchange.
Chitale called Akcakoca a special place for him. "Akcakoca is one of the most beautiful places I have seen in Türkiye. The harbor where we are right now is very authentic and has kept its traditional look. The sea is magnificent. I think it is one of the most beautiful views in the world. I am sharing this beauty in Akcakoca through my art," he said.
Impressed by how Türkiye protects traditional structures and cultural values, he said, "You have succeeded in protecting your buildings, your language, your culture. I am happy to discover these and reflect them in my art."
"When I reflect these in my works and exhibit them in different parts of the world, those who see this cultural richness will want to get to know Türkiye and Akcakoca," he added.
Chitale noted that he has pursued painting, an art he loved passionately as a child, professionally for 30 years.
