A documentary spotlighting ongoing efforts to move the historic Harput neighborhood in Elazig province from UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List to the organization’s Permanent World Heritage List was screened simultaneously in schools across the province on Feb. 11, reaching around 120,000 students.

What the film is trying to build up

Prepared by the Firat Development Agency, the documentary lays out Harput’s layered historical background, cultural richness, and distinctive architectural fabric, framing these features through UNESCO World Heritage criteria.

The film was made available to all schools in the city with support from the Elazig Governor’s Office and the Provincial Directorate of National Education, with the stated goal of building up student awareness around cultural heritage and the city’s historical identity. The screenings were held at the same time across schools in the province, which officials described as a way to help the message carry through widely and consistently.

Officials say the bid needs more than paperwork

Mehmet Sirin Budancamanak, secretary general of the Firat Development Agency, said Harput, described as roughly 4,500 years old, should make it onto the permanent list because of its historical and cultural potential.

He said the work is being carried out in coordination with relevant institutions, while adding that the process cannot be treated as only a technical application and instead has to be backed up by preservation, promotion, and passing the heritage on to future generations.

Provincial Director of National Education Beraat Sahin said about 120,000 students had the chance to watch the documentary, describing the province-wide screenings as an important step in building up historical heritage awareness among young people.
