The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts has opened applications to determine the project that will represent the Türkiye Pavilion at the 20th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, set to take place from May 8 to Nov. 21, 2027.
The foundation, which coordinates the national pavilion, announced a two-stage open call inviting a wide range of contributors, including curators, architects, artists, historians, designers, theorists and critics, as well as anyone producing work in architecture and related disciplines.
The open call has been structured to open up participation across disciplines, while encouraging proposals that take on current issues in architecture through fresh ideas and concepts. Applicants are expected to put forward projects that engage with local, regional and global dimensions, while also rethinking established narratives through interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approaches.
At the same time, proposals are required to set out a coherent curatorial framework, making it clear how the project will position itself within ongoing architectural discussions. The pavilion is organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Schuco Türkiye and Vitra acting as co-sponsors.
Beyond conceptual depth, the selected project is expected to stand out through a strong visual narrative, while also ensuring that its theme remains clear and accessible to a broad audience. The call has been opened to multinational teams, provided that a team leader from Türkiye is included.
Applicants are also expected to build their proposals in line with the overarching theme to be announced by the exhibition’s curators, Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu, and to develop an approach that connects with this framework.
The process will move forward in two stages, starting with an initial submission that includes a detailed curatorial proposal, exhibition design and spatial framework, as well as information on team structure and working principles. Applicants must also provide their CVs and portfolios.
Following this first round, a selection committee will shortlist three projects, whose teams will then be asked to submit more detailed plans covering timelines, working methods, printed materials and budget considerations. At the end of the process, the selected team will take on full curatorial responsibility for the exhibition and will develop the project in coordination with both the selection committee and the IKSV team.
Applicants are required to upload their materials through an online form by June 10, including an English-language PDF containing a clearly articulated curatorial proposal and a summary project board.
Further details are available on the IKSV website.
