March 2026 brings a busy exhibition calendar as museums and galleries open new shows for the spring season.

Cultural institutions across Europe, the United States, and Asia are presenting major retrospectives and experimental contemporary works, while Istanbul’s art scene also welcomes several new exhibitions.

From historical painters to contemporary installations, the month reflects a wider trend in the global art world. Major museums revisit classical masters while artists explore technology, identity, and social change.

In Istanbul, several exhibitions open this month across the city’s museums and galleries.

Istanbul exhibitions to visit in March 2026

Several Istanbul venues launched new shows in early March or will open exhibitions later in the month.

These exhibitions range from historical retrospectives to contemporary art projects that address social and political themes.

Pera Museum opened the exhibition "By the Water: The Life and Art of Halil Pasa" which explores the life and artistic production of Ottoman painter Halil Pasa. Curated by Dr. Ozlem Inay Erten, the exhibition examines the artist’s work across different geographies and periods using archival materials and works from private collections.

  • The exhibition runs from March 5 to August 23.

At Piramid Sanat in Beyoglu, artist Bedri Baykam presents "Baykam on Picasso: Les Demoiselles Revisited." The exhibition builds a dialogue between Baykam’s work and Pablo Picasso’s influence on modern art. The project began in Paris and now continues in Istanbul, exploring the relationship between historical references and contemporary artistic production.

  • It will open on March 26 and run until September 5.

A group exhibition titled "Constellations (or we don’t know what to do…)" will open at G-Art Gallery in Beyoglu. Curated by Vahap Avsar, the exhibition brings together artists including Ates Alpar, Beyza Durhan, Cengiz Tekin, Didem Erbas, Ergin Cavusoglu, Erkan Ozgen, Ipek Duben, Merve Unsal, Onur Fendoglu, Pelda Aytas and Vahap Avsar. The show explores the tension between global connectivity and growing systems of isolation and surveillance.

  • It runs from March 5 to April 24.

Another exhibition currently on display is "The Grand Excess" by Lal Batman at Pilevneli Dolapdere. The show critiques the artificial spectacle created by social media culture while combining historical and cross-cultural references. It also incorporates scent and sound design to create a multisensory experience.

  • The exhibition runs until March 14.

Major international exhibitions opening in March

Museums around the world are also presenting major exhibitions this month, bringing together classical works and contemporary art.

Several European institutions are hosting exhibitions dedicated to major artists:

  • Nan Goldin – “This Will Not End Well,” Grand Palais, Paris (March 18 – June 21, 2026) - The retrospective combines photography with narrative slide shows to present Goldin’s work documenting AIDS, addiction, and New York’s underground scene.
  • Jenny Saville, Ca’ Pesaro Museum, Venice (March 28 – November 22, 2026) - Saville’s paintings examine the human body with large-scale canvases that challenge traditional representations of nudity.
  • Maria Lassnig and Edvard Munch, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg (March 27 – August 30, 2026) - The exhibition compares the two artists’ exploration of emotional and physical experience through painting.

Several museums also focus on historical masters:

  • Matisse (1941–1954), Grand Palais, Paris (March 24 – July 26, 2026) - The exhibition presents Henri Matisse’s late works, including his well-known cut-out compositions created after he could no longer paint normally.
  • Monet and Venice, de Young Museum, San Francisco (March 21 – July 26, 2026) - The exhibition reunites the paintings Monet created during his 1908 visit to Venice.
  • Hokusai: Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji, National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo (March 28 – June 14, 2026) - The show presents the famous ukiyo-e series using detailed analysis of each print and the artist’s use of Prussian blue pigment.

Other exhibitions focus on contemporary themes such as technology and postcolonial identity.

The New Museum in New York will open "New Humans: Memories of the Future" on March 21, bringing together artists who explore artificial intelligence and biological technologies.

Istanbul's March exhibition calendar reflects a broader pattern in the art world. Many museums are revisiting classical artists while also presenting contemporary works that address social and technological change.
