The annual “Gonen Fair,” a long-standing tradition in the Gonen district of Türkiye’s Balikesir province, once again captivated thousands this June with its vibrant atmosphere, attracting families, traders, and visitors from across the region. Held every year for over half a century, the fair welcomed around 40,000 attendees during its five-day run from June 16.

A long-standing tradition revived with enthusiasm

First launched in 1966, the Gonen Fair has evolved into a major regional event, blending commerce, local cuisine, and entertainment. This year’s edition was held across a 26,000-square-meter indoor area and an additional 4,000-square-meter open space, accommodating approximately 2,500 vendor stands. From handcrafted goods and specialty foods to games and amusement rides, the fair catered to a broad audience seeking both nostalgic and novel experiences.

A gathering point for locals and visitors alike

People from neighboring towns and provinces made the trip to Gonen, including visitors from as far as Bursa, Gaziantep, and Canakkale. Many expressed a deep personal connection to the event. One attendee from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus emphasized the importance of passing the fair on to future generations, saying: "The fair is a passion, a love. If we approach it with joy and kindness, it will bring happiness and peace to our children."

A German resident originally from Gonen said she has been coming to the fair since childhood, adding that it continues to improve each year. First-time visitor Hatice Donmez, who traveled from Biga, said she had heard about the fair’s charm and decided to see it for herself. Social media also played a role in drawing new attendees, such as Huseyin Balaban from Bursa, who noted: “I’m glad I came—no regrets. The entertainment areas are excellent. I recommend it to everyone.”

Local businesses embrace crowd

The fair also serves as a platform for local and regional businesses. One vendor from Gaziantep praised the opportunity to showcase his region’s signature products such as chili paste and spices. Others, like butcher Hilmi Isik, said the fair is a “valuable asset” for the district, noting that his team offered professional service and high-quality food to a steady stream of customers.

Vendors shared a common sentiment: the fair brings life to the town. “People are coming from everywhere,” said another stallholder. “I wish it lasted 10 days. It creates a positive activity for the community.”

Visitors appreciated both the variety of stalls and the welcoming weather, making the Gonen Fair a standout event once again in Türkiye’s summer festival calendar.
