Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer famous for her 1980s hits "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Holding Out for a Hero," has woken up from a medically induced coma after emergency surgery, her family and team said.

The 75-year-old was put into a coma at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, in May to help her recover after surgery.

A statement on her official website said late Monday she is "no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care."

Her doctors are hopeful about her recovery. "Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery, but it is going to take time," the statement said.

Concerts cancelled through August

All of Tyler's shows through August have been canceled or postponed. She was supposed to perform in Germany, Austria, and at a festival in Britain.

Her team has not shared a new schedule or informed when she might return to performing.

Tyler's family thanked fans for their "huge outpouring of love" and said she knows about the messages people have sent.

Career spanning five decades

Tyler became well known in the 1970s with songs like "Lost in France" and "It's a Heartache," which made her a standout in British pop and rock.

She became internationally famous with "Total Eclipse of the Heart," a power ballad that topped the charts in both Britain and the United States and remains one of the best-selling singles of the 1980s.

Her next big hit, "Holding out for a Hero," came out in 1984 and became even more popular when it was used in the movie "Footloose," which was a huge box-office success that year.

Since then, the song has stayed popular and has been used in movies, TV shows, and commercials for many years.

Tyler has continued to perform and release music into her 70s, with a busy touring schedule in Europe.

Before she was hospitalized, she had planned several live shows across Europe for 2026.

Emergency surgery or the nature of her medical condition has not been made public by her family or representatives.
