Turkish star Burak Ozcivit is set to return to television screens with a brand-new project, "The Place Where the Sun Rises," premiering Thursday, Sept. 17, on the ATV channel.
Actress Beyza Gumulcine joins him as his co-star, with the two sharing the screen together for the first time.
The story centers on Kenan Kozan, played by Ozcivit, son of the influential Kozan family, whose trip to Germany changes his life when he meets Leyla Breger, played by Beyza Gumulcine, the love of his life.
Turning his back on the path his mother, Celadet, played by Sibel Tascioglu, had planned for him, Kenan chooses love, setting in motion a series of events he could never have predicted.
Written by Yildiz Tunc and directed by Cagri Vila Lostuvali and Cigdem Bozali, the cast and crew recently filmed over the weekend in Ankara, where the city doubled for scenes set in Germany.
The casting saga behind the scenes has also come to light. Ugur Gunes had originally been cast in the lead role, but reportedly exited the project just five days before filming was set to begin; the role was then handed to Ozcivit,
He later addressed the departure with some pointed remarks of his own.
According to journalist Mehmet Ustundag, who spoke on TV8's talk show "Gel Konusalim," Ozcivit's casting wasn't actually a decision made by the production company; it came directly from ATV's network executives.
Ustundag claims Ozcivit personally expressed interest in taking on the role and held discussions with ATV leadership to make it happen.
