The Covent Garden Sinfonietta, an ensemble made up of musicians from London's Royal Opera House, will hold its first concerts in Türkiye at the North Moat of Bodrum Castle in Bodrum, a resort town on Türkiye's southwestern Aegean coast in Mugla province, on Sept. 4 and 5. The orchestra has been rehearsing in the lead-up to the performances.
Maestro Philippe Chizhevsky, music director and chief conductor of the Yevgeny Svetlanov State Academic Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the concerts, known for his interpretations of classical works spanning multiple eras.
Pianist Adam Gutseriev and cellist Dali Gutserieva, who are siblings, will perform as soloists. The two have appeared at major European concert venues and performed with the Covent Garden Sinfonietta in Paris and Versailles this past spring. They are scheduled to perform with the same orchestra at Vienna's Musikverein in the fall.
Speaking to reporters, Gutserieva said she had previously visited Bodrum as a tourist but would be performing there for the first time as a musician.
She said she planned to perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Rococo Variations," describing the piece as well-known, and said she expected the audience to respond positively. She added that she has a strong affection for both Türkiye and Bodrum.
Chizhevsky said he had also previously visited Bodrum as a tourist and had liked the town. He said the program would include pieces for piano and cello accompaniment by Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss, and Richard Wagner, adding that he hoped audiences would enjoy the performances.
The program includes Strauss's "Burleske" for piano and orchestra, along with Tchaikovsky's "Rococo Variations," a key work in the cello repertoire.
The Covent Garden Sinfonietta is known for performing at major classical music venues across Europe.
The orchestra is scheduled to perform at Vienna's Musikverein in November for the fourth consecutive year.
