Malatya's Darende district kicked off the 73rd edition of the Traditional Zengibar Karakucak Wrestling and Culture Festival with a procession and an opening program.

As part of the festival, district officials and residents gathered in front of the Government House. The procession, accompanied by the Malatya Metropolitan Municipality Mehteran Band, a traditional Ottoman military band, walked to the historic Yusuf Pasha Bedesten, a covered market or bazaar.

District governor highlights festival's cultural role

Speaking at the program held in front of the bedesten, Darende District Governor Omer Sirkeci said the district is a home of learning, wisdom and culture. He thanked those who contributed to strengthening unity and solidarity during August, which he described as a month of victory.

Sirkeci said the festival was not merely a sporting event but represented decades of shared excitement, the preservation of values passed down from the past, and an opportunity to bring different generations together in the same square.

"This deep-rooted event, which we have come together for the 73rd time, is one of the finest examples of our Darende embracing its past and its will," he said.

Mayor links wrestling tradition to district's heritage

Mayor Alican Bozkurt also stated that the district is committed to protecting its historical and cultural heritage. He described Darende as an ancient district shaped by the spiritual legacy of Somuncu Baba and Hulusi Efendi, two revered religious figures.

Bozkurt said the region has served for centuries as a meeting point for faith, tolerance, brotherhood and good people, adding that the district carries the responsibility of preserving this heritage.

He noted that local authorities continue working to prepare Darende for the future and pass on its values to coming generations, drawing on the strength of the past.

Bozkurt described the Zengibar Karakucak Wrestling Festival, held for 73 years, as one of the most important parts of this legacy. "Karakucak wrestling is not just a sport for us. It is a symbol of chivalry, courage, labor and hard work," he said, adding that as wrestlers compete in the arena, they are also keeping an ancient tradition alive.

Following the speeches, an animal was sacrificed, and prayers were offered. The festival will conclude on Aug. 30 with a variety of events.
