The five other stars of "Friends" do not appear in a new Netflix documentary about Matthew Perry, and the film’s director says they were invited but declined because they are still grieving the actor, who died in 2023.
"The One About Matthew Perry," a three-part docuseries, began streaming on Netflix on Tuesday, just before the third anniversary of Perry’s death at age 54.
The series traces his rise to stardom as Chandler Bing on "Friends," his long, private struggle with addiction and the investigation that followed his death from the acute effects of ketamine.
Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, speaks publicly about his death for the first time in the series.
Several other people close to him are missing, including his "Friends" co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.
Director Mary Robertson told the Los Angeles Times that many of Perry’s loved ones were still trying to make sense of losing him, and why.
She thanked those who did take part, saying they understood from the start that the film could be both honest and affectionate, "a love letter to Matthew."
Robertson has said she was inspired to make the film by Perry’s candid 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing." After his death, she said she felt a renewed commitment to showing the full scope of his life and his contribution to popular culture.
