In a symbolic move linking past and present governance, the municipal council of Soke in Aydin, western Türkiye, held an official meeting inside the ancient city of Priene, a site currently listed on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List.
The session took place in a structure that was historically used as a council building, creating a direct visual and symbolic connection between ancient civic traditions and modern local governance.
The meeting was chaired by Soke Mayor Mustafa Iberya Arikan, with discussions covering urban zoning plans, budget arrangements, property allocations and regulatory updates.
Speaking to reporters, Arikan indicated that the decision to convene at the ancient city of Priene was intended to raise awareness and contribute to the promotion of the region.
By staging the meeting within a historically significant site, the municipality sought to draw attention to the area’s cultural value while linking administrative processes with heritage preservation.
Mine Asci, head of the Priene site, provided updates on efforts to move the ancient city from UNESCO’s Tentative List to its permanent World Heritage List.
