The Gaziantep Archaeology Museum, located in Sehitkamil district in southeastern Türkiye, has reopened to visitors after undergoing comprehensive reinforcement, repair and renewal work following the Feb. 6, 2023, earthquakes.
Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism said display cases, pedestals and exhibition areas were reorganized in line with contemporary museum practices as part of the reopening.
Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said in a social media post that the museum had undergone reinforcement, repair, and renewal, including ground surveys, structural system and roof reinforcement, and interior and exterior facade renewal.
According to the ministry, the museum consists of three blocks. Ground surveys were carried out after the Kahramanmaras-centered earthquakes, and core samples were taken from columns and beams to prepare reinforcement projects.
Suspended ceilings were removed to assess the condition of the building's reinforced concrete elements, after which digital modeling and performance analysis were conducted.
As part of the reinforcement project, demolition work was carried out in the reserve exhibition hall on the third floor of Block B, where steel flooring and beams were reinforced. Injection applications were carried out on cracked beams, plaster repairs were completed and a new roof was built.
The Feb. 6, 2023, earthquakes, centered near Kahramanmaras with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.6, struck a wide area of southeastern Türkiye and killed more than 46,000 people, according to prior reporting.
The quakes damaged numerous cultural heritage sites across the region, including museums in Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya and Adiyaman.
