Global art fairs, theater, film festivals shape first week of Jan. 2026

A wide range of cultural events will take place around the world this week, bringing together artists, performers, filmmakers, and audiences across major cultural hubs. From international art fairs and theater productions to film festivals and concerts, the global arts calendar remains busy in the first full week of January.

International art fairs in Los Angeles, Denmark, Uruguay in Jan. 2026

Several major art fairs will open their doors this week, attracting collectors, curators, and art professionals from different regions.

The “LA Art Show” will take place from Jan. 7 to 11 at the West Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center. The event brings together artists and curators from around the world and is known for its curated sections and special programming.

Denmark’s long running art fair “Art Herning,” held since 1998, will welcome visitors from Jan. 9 to 11 at Messecenter Herning. More than 250 international and local artists are set to present their work during the fair.

In South America, “Este Arte,” one of the region’s established art gatherings, continues its 12th edition in Jose Ignacio, Uruguay, through Jan. 7, hosting artists and visitors in the coastal town.

Theater, stage productions in London, Prague's cultural calendars

London’s West End will host several well known productions this week. “Back to the Future The Musical” will run from Jan. 7 to 12 at the Adelphi Theatre, bringing the popular film franchise to the stage.

Agatha Christie’s classic mystery “The Mousetrap,” the longest running play in theater history, will continue performances at St Martin’s Theatre from Jan. 5 to 10.

Another family focused production, “Matilda The Musical,” adapted from Roald Dahl’s novel and produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, will be staged at the Cambridge Theatre from Jan. 6 to 11.

In Prague, audiences will be able to watch “Frankenstein,” adapted from Mary Shelley’s novel, on Jan. 7 at the Estates Theatre. The Czech capital will also host “Antologia,” a production featuring standout scenes from more than 50 years of black light theatre, on Jan. 8 at the Reduta Theatre.

Film festivals continue in United States in 2026

Film festivals remain a central part of the week’s cultural agenda in the United States.

The “37th Palm Springs International Film Festival,” also known as PSIFF, will continue through Jan. 12 in California’s Coachella Valley, bringing together filmmakers, industry professionals, and international audiences.

Meanwhile, the “St. Augustine Film Festival” will take place from Jan. 5 to 11, offering a diverse film program alongside special guests and screenings.

Concerts, classical performances across Europe, Caucasus

Concert halls across Europe and Azerbaijan will host a variety of performances this week.

World famous violinist Andre Rieu will perform on Jan. 10 at Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam and on Jan. 11 at Sportpaleis in Antwerp.

Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro will open their European tour for their new album “Futique” on Jan. 9 at the SSE Arena in Belfast.

In Baku, several concerts will highlight Azerbaijan’s musical heritage. As part of the “Mugham Evening” project, a concert will be held today at the International Mugham Center. Classical music audiences will also be able to attend “Mozart A Rare Evening of Classical Music” on Jan. 7 at the Azerbaijan State Academic Philharmonic.

Another series titled “Elegance of Mugham Evening” will take place on Jan. 7 and 10 at the Show Gallery, combining traditional mugham with contemporary presentation. A jubilee concert marking the 65th birthday of clarinetist Hakim Abdullayev will be held on Jan. 9 at the International Mugham Center.

New film releases in US cinemas first week of Jan. 2026

Four films are set to open in cinemas across the United States this week.

The horror film “Primate,” starring Johnny Sequoyah and Troy Kotsur, focuses on human nature conflict.

The action science fiction sequel “Greenland 2: Migration,” starring Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin, follows humanity’s struggle to survive after a global catastrophe.

The biographical drama “The Chronology of Water,” led by Imogen Poots, explores themes of trauma, memory, and healing.
