Goksel Arsoy, one of the most beloved actors in Turkish film history, nicknamed the "Golden Boy" of Turkish cinema, has died at the age of 90.
His daughter, Askim Arsoy, announced his death on social media. Arsoy was among the unforgettable leading men of Yesilcam, the name given to Türkiye's golden-age film industry, which produced hundreds of popular films in the mid-20th century.
Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy paid tribute to Arsoy on social media, calling him an unforgettable face of Yesilcam who won the love of generations with his elegance and memorable roles.
The minister highlighted works from "Safak BekCileri" (Guardians of the Dawn) to the "Altin Cocuk" (Golden Boy) series, noted Arsoy's Presidential Grand Award for Culture and Arts, and offered condolences to his family, fans and the film community.
Born on March 15, 1936, in the central Anatolian city of Kayseri, Arsoy studied economics at Istanbul University. While still a student, he worked at Yesilkoy Airport in Istanbul.
His path to the screen began when he caught the attention of producer Fuat Rutkay and director Sirri Gultekin. He made his film debut in 1957 with "Kara Gunlerim" (My Dark Days). Roles in "Kelepce" (Handcuffs) and "Samanyolu" (Milky Way) soon followed, and within a short time he was counted among Yesilcam's leading actors.
A major turning point came with the 1959 film "Samanyolu," in which he shared the lead role with actress Belgin Doruk. The two went on to appear together in 15 films and became one of the most beloved on-screen couples of their time.
Arsoy's career extended well beyond acting. He founded his own film company and produced 12 films. A lifelong fascination with aviation, which dated back to his childhood, found its way into his work; he both produced and starred in the 1963 film Safak Bekcileri, which he described as one of the first aviation films in Turkish cinema.
Alongside acting and producing, Arsoy also worked in music and took on projects across a range of genres, carving out a distinctive place for himself in Yesilcam.
